Reebee Garofalo’s 1978 “The Genealogy of Pop/Rock Music” chart above records over 700 artists and 30 styles of music between the years 1955 to 1978 in a visually gratifying manner. “For each performer, the length of time that he/she remained a major hit maker is provided. The overlapping streams allow you to compare the longevity and influence of multiple artists for the same time period. The birth and genealogy of each stylistic category is presented, along with an estimation of its share of total record sales.”
You can read more about the history of Reebee’s chart on his site, as well as access a magnifying loader of the original drawing. Information design specialist Edward Tufte also covers Reebee’s chart in detail over here. (N.B: Tufte is an interesting figure in his own right, enarmoured with expressing “the poetry of visual information”, and is more or less the king of statistical design).
